During hot summer months, we need all the help we can get to go throughout the day with our makeup still in-tact. Runny mascara can let the world know that we are anything but easy-breezy but how do we get long-lasting mascara that won’t have us looking like a raccoon at the end of the day? Waterproof mascara is the best trick for summer, but how to pick the best one and how do you take it off entirely at the end of each night? Keep reading for all of the tips on how to wear waterproof mascara during summer.
What is the Best Waterproof Mascara for Summer
Before we go into the best of waterproof mascara, we’ll discuss why a lot of people aren’t into it. Some might ask, “Is waterproof mascara bad for your lashes?” Yes and no. The chemicals in waterproof mascara are more drying than regular mascara and can make it harder to get off. If you scrub too hard, you can ruin your lashes.
The great thing about waterproof mascara is that it doesn’t run, or smudge and you can do summer without having to think about blackened under eyes. The solution to keeping your lashes healthy is knowing which product is best for you and to regularly practice lash care.
Know the Difference
There is a difference between waterproof and water-resistant mascara. Water-resistant mascara might be more your speed if you’re just worried about sweat or humidity. Waterproof mascara is for swimming or a monsoon. Water-resistant mascara might be preferable to you because it’s less-harsh than waterproof mascara and more comfortable to remove.
When choosing a waterproof mascara, just like any other makeup product, you want it to be free of allergens or questionable ingredients like Retinal acetate (banned in Canada), parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.
The best choice for any level of waterproof is a formula that forms a small tube around your lashes. These come off pretty well with cleanser and warm water. They also, don’t flake or smudge and come off pretty well with just warm water and cleanser.
Three Waterproof Mascaras to Try
Here are three of our favorite waterproof mascaras for summer.
A fabulous smudge-proof mascara is Kevyn Aucoin The Curling Mascara. It’s a tubing mascara that stays on without flaking and is easier to take off than most mascaras. It also adds the length and volume to satisfy all of your summer mascara cravings.
Lise Watier, a makeup artist from Canada, makes impressive waterproof mascaras but our favorite is her original Lise Watier Dramatique Weatherproof Mascara. It’s not a tube formula but stays put while you’re out living those hot summer nights with big, beautiful lashes. It comes off similarly to regular mascaras.
Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara is a cult favorite because it builds to make lashes look thicker without looking fake. It’s also REALLY cheap. So, if you’ve never tried a waterproof mascara, this one won’t be such a significant investment.
3 Tips for Wearing Waterproof Mascara in Summer
1. Just for a Season
Unless you have extra oily skin around the eyes, waterproof mascara should mostly be worn in extreme heat, rain or while swimming. It’s also great to wear when you know that you’re going to be dancing or to the gym if you must but If you don’t need it, there’s no reason to wear it all-year-round.
First off, no matter what type of mascara you wear or don’t wear, you should be hydrating your lashes at night. Your lashes are made up of hair that you want to keep healthy. The best way to do this is with oils like Castor, coconut or emu oils. These are also the best oils to use on your eyelashes for length and growth while hydrating.
3. Take it Off
Even if you’ve had five Dirty Martini’s and it’s 3 AM, Y’all should be taking your mascara off at night. Mascaras harden and dry out lashes. Waterproof mascara is even more hardcore so overnight, rubbing your face against a pillow for example, can potentially break your lashes. So be sure to be removing your mascara every night.
How to Take Off Waterproof Mascara
Taking mascara off, in general, can be rough on the eyes and lashes, so here is a tip on how to take off mascara in a way that hydrates and protects those precious, little hairs.
Oil cleansing cleansers are designed to break down and reduce dirt and excess oil by mimicking healthy skin oils. They also help to balance oily skin while breaking down even the harshest waterproof formulas. If the thought of using oil bothers you, use your regular cleanser right after.
The easiest way to remove waterproof makeup is to apply and massage oil cleanser all over the face). Break up the makeup and then wet a clean, dark, wash-cloth and wipe off the makeup and oil cleanser off with ease.
If you follow some of these tips, you should be good to hit up all of those pool parties and hot summer festivals without mascara running under your eyes. We’ll see you poolside!
